UK University Scholarships
Studying in the UK offers Bangladeshi students a world-class education, access to global career opportunities, and the chance to experience a rich cultural environment. However, the cost of tuition and living can be a concern for many. Scholarships can play a vital role in making a UK education more affordable and accessible.
A wide range of funding opportunities is available to support Bangladeshi students at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. These scholarships are offered by UK universities, the UK government, international organisations, and private donors, with awards based on academic merit, financial need, or specific subject areas.
Types of Scholarships
University-Specific Scholarships
Many UK universities offer scholarships exclusively for international students, including those from Bangladesh. These may be automatically considered at the time of application or require a separate application. Examples include:
- International Merit Scholarships – awarded for strong academic performance
- Vice-Chancellor’s Awards – high-value scholarships recognising outstanding applicants
- Alumni and Progression Scholarships – for students continuing from foundation to degree, or master’s to PhD
- Regional Scholarships – targeted specifically at South Asian or Bangladeshi applicants
UK Government Scholarships
Bangladeshi students can also apply for several prestigious government-funded scholarships:
- Chevening Scholarships – fully funded master’s degrees for future leaders and influencers, covering tuition fees, living expenses, and travel
- Commonwealth Scholarships – for students from low and middle-income Commonwealth countries, supporting postgraduate study in development-related fields
- GREAT Scholarships – funded by the British Council and UK universities, offering £10,000 towards tuition fees for selected master’s programmes
External & International Funding
Some non-UK organisations also provide financial support to Bangladeshi students:
- The Charles Wallace Bangladesh Trust – supports postgraduate research and short courses in the arts, heritage, and humanities
- Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation – open to students from South Asia pursuing postgraduate studies at select UK universities
- Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Scholarships – for students from member countries, including Bangladesh, supporting both undergraduate and postgraduate studies
Eligibility
Scholarship criteria vary, but common requirements include:
- A strong academic background
- A clearly written personal statement or scholarship essay
- References from teachers, professors, or employers
- English language proficiency (usually IELTS or equivalent)
Students are encouraged to begin researching and preparing early. Many scholarships are competitive and have deadlines well in advance of course start dates.
When to Apply
- Most scholarship deadlines fall between January and May for September entry
- Some university scholarships for January entry may accept applications as late as October or November
- Government scholarships like Chevening open applications around August of the previous year
