If you want to achieve an IELTS score of 6.5+, you will need to rephrase simple verbs (e.g. do, get) with more advanced and precise expressions. Each synonym (a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word) has a slightly different meaning, despite appearing to be similar.

IELTS Synonym Exercise
1. Get
Alternatives for ‘get’ include Obtain and Acquire.
Obtain
- Example: I get a permission from his manager. → I obtained permission from his manager.
Acquire
- Example: He get land. → He acquired land.
- Example: She get a new skill. → She acquired a new skill.
2. Do
Alternatives for ‘do’ include Execute and Accomplish.
Execute
- Example: Soldiers do what they are told by a commander. → Soldiers execute commands.
Accomplish
- Example: He must complete/do his task. → He is obligated to accomplish the task.
3. Keep
Alternatives for ‘keep’ include Preserve and Sustain.
Preserve
- Example: This project is launched to keep the nature. → This project is launched to preserve nature.
Sustain
- Example: It is difficult to keep a University institution. → It is difficult to sustain a University institution.
