StudyIn works to help students succeed, and we know Canadian university students are now in the Winter Exam season. We have compiled our top 5 study tips to help you do your best and rock your exams!

1. Plan your study time

      • Write down your study schedule ahead of time
      • Schedule breaks-give your mind a breather, maybe go for a walk
      • Schedule time to eat -your brain needs food!
      • Set little goals to feel accomplished and avoid getting overwhelmed:
        • Eg. read chapters 5-7, summarize
        • Complete flow charts for sections 8-13

2. Create a study group

      • Zoom is a great, covid-safe way to study with friends
      • You may have questions that they have the answers to and vice versa.
      • Oral practice through quizzing one another can be super effective for learning
      • Invite your classmates, make new friends
      • Stay on task though!

3. Eat a healthy meal beforehand studying or writing an exam

      • Nutritious food helps your concentration and memory
      • Don’t eat too much sugar-instead try energy fuelling carbs: too much sugar could have you crash in the middle of a study sesh or exam
      • Try some yummy brain food! Some nutritious options include:
        • Fish,
        • Nuts
        • Seeds
        • Yogurt
        • Blueberries

4. Get a good sleep the night before your exam or study session

      • The night before your exam, go to bed early!
      • Sleep is proven to help learning and memory
      • A sleep-deprived person cannot focus attention optimally and therefore cannot learn efficiently
      • Sleep helps in the consolidation of memory, which is essential for learning new information

5. Use flow charts, diagrams, and visual aids

    • Visual aids can be really helpful in memorization
      • Try different colors, shapes, and arrows to direct attention toward important information
    • Large chunks of text on a page is hard to process, find ways to break it up by various topics
      • Highlight information in textbooks
      • Colour code ideas or topics
      • Use symbols to link ideas or topics together
    • Diagrams communicate dense information quickly and clearly
