1. New Zealand is Investing in International Students

New Zealand has announced a bold 10-year strategy to grow its international student community from 83,700 in 2024 to 119,000 by 2034.

If you already hold a visa limited to 20 hours, you’ll need to apply for a variation of conditions or a new student visa to access the increased work allowance.

Plus, work rights are now being extended to all tertiary-level students enrolled in exchange or study abroad programmes, even those staying for just one semester.

Not eligible for post-study work rights? Don’t worry. New Zealand is introducing a six-month graduate work visa to help more students transition from study into skilled employment.

This new pathway allows you time to find a job relevant to your field, and then potentially move on to a longer Accredited Employer Work Visa if you’re hired. It’s a great option if you’re completing a shorter or vocational programme and want a stepping stone into New Zealand’s workforce.

4. Visas May Soon Get Easier and More Flexible

The government is also exploring options for multi-year student visas, which would simplify the application process and reduce stress for students taking longer or multi-phase programmes. This would mean fewer renewals and a smoother experience for students planning to study and stay in New Zealand for several years.
