Overview
The University of Southampton is situated in the city of Southampton, on the south coast of England. It is a founding member of the Russell Group and Worldwide Universities Network, and currently has around 24,000 students enrolled, of which 2,000 are international from more than 100 different countries. Southampton is ranked in the top 1% of global universities.
The University is known for being research-intensive and has the only Engineering faculty in the UK to receive the highest rating (5*) across all disciplines in the latest Research Excellence Framework. Southampton is cited as the UK’s leading university for Engineering.
The University of Southampton places great emphasis on inter-disciplinary cooperation and collaboration with industry. Employers are often invited to Open Career Days on campus, while the Southampton Careers Service offers free advice to all University of Southampton students for up to three years after graduation.
Services
Southampton runs a meet and greet service for students arriving in January and September, including a free pick up from Heathrow and Gatwick airports, as well as talks by staff members and events organised before and during the beginning of term. There is a dedicated international student support service and English language training unit, as well as several social and welfare networks.

The University of Southampton is one of the top 30 UK universities for graduate starting salaries and is ranked 17th among universities targeted by the largest number of top employers. 94% of Southampton’s full-time undergraduates who received their degrees in 2013/14 were in employment or progressed to further study within six months of graduating.
Following the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, Southampton was ranked eighth in the UK for research intensity and 11th in the UK based on the volume and quality of research. Over 97% of Southampton research was assessed as ‘world-leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’.
Accommodation
All University of Southampton international students are guaranteed accommodation for two years in University Halls of Residence. There are 20 Halls of Residence housing around 3,000 students across Southampton and Winchester and accommodation ranges from en suite to standard, with catered and shared room options available. The Accommodation Service can also help students find private rented accommodation, with regularly updated lists and guides on available properties.
