The University of Alberta has been ranked the number one university in Canada for artificial intelligence, and 53rd globally, in the U.S. News 2025–2026 Best Global Universities Rankings. The ranking reflects both the university’s research strength and academic reputation in the field.
Artificial intelligence is a key area of focus at the U of A, with researchers working on projects that range from supporting doctors with AI note-taking tools to developing accessibility apps and using AI to assess forest coverage for climate change mitigation.
“This ranking highlights the outstanding work our researchers and students are doing in AI, and the real-world impact it is having,” said President Bill Flanagan. “AI is one of our core areas of global excellence.”
The university’s leadership in artificial intelligence is supported by partnerships with organisations like the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii), and 24 Canada CIFAR AI Chairs including reinforcement learning pioneer Richard Sutton, a recent recipient of the A.M. Turing Award.
U of A’s AI achievements come alongside other major recognitions this year, including eighth in the world for sustainability impact (THE Impact Rankings 2025) and 94th globally in the 2026 QS World University Rankings.
