Overview
The University of Oxford’s Department for Lifelong Learning opens access to world-class education for people at every stage of life. Each year, more than 15,000 adult learners from around the world take part in part-time and flexible programmes, with students ranging in age from 18 to their 90s. Whether you are pursuing a personal interest, developing your career, or working towards a qualification, Oxford offers opportunities tailored to your goals.
Flexible Learning Options
The Department provides an extensive range of open-access short courses. Weekly classes take place in Oxford, online in real time, or through flexible online study. Day schools and weekend events allow participants to explore topics intensively, while lecture series introduce subjects in depth, available in person or online. Many courses can be taken for credit, meaning they may count towards a recognised Oxford qualification.
Undergraduate and Postgraduate Awards
Oxford offers part-time undergraduate award courses – certificates, diplomas and advanced diplomas – equivalent to first, second and third-year university level. Programmes are designed with flexibility in mind, often combining online study with in-person teaching, and some can be studied entirely online.
Postgraduate opportunities include over 35 part-time programmes leading to certificates, diplomas, master’s degrees and DPhils. These are delivered through a mix of short Oxford residencies and online learning. In many cases, individual modules can also be studied as standalone short courses.
Professional Development and Specialist Training
Lifelong learning at Oxford also supports working professionals through continuing professional development (CPD). Subject areas include business and management, cultural heritage, technology and AI, environment and sustainability, and medical and health sciences. Courses are designed to help professionals enhance their skills, stay at the forefront of their fields, and respond to global challenges.
By joining the Department for Lifelong Learning, students gain access to Oxford’s academic excellence, flexible study pathways, and a diverse international community of learners.
