Every year more than 430,000 international students from over 200 countries attend over 40 higher education institutions in London. If you are thinking of becoming one of them, you will want three things when looking for somewhere to live in the UK capital:

  • Safety
  • Affordability
  • Excitement

The Rentonomy website conducted a survey to identify the best areas for students to live in London based on rent levels, distance to central London, bars and pubs, crime, and social-demographic. This is what they found.

Five of the cheapest places to live in London as a student

Woolwich: A popular area for students to rent because of its location in the south-east, and the average cost of renting a room is £400pcm (per calendar month). It takes less than 30 minutes to reach central London from Woolwich.

Deptford: Also situated in south-east London, the area is well-known for its dockyard. The rent is slightly more compared to Woolwich at £530pcm, but this is offset as the journey time to central London is only 20 minutes.

Leytonstone: A suburban area in east London, Leytonstone is also the birth place of David Beckham. The average cost of renting a room is £480pcm, while the journey time into London is 25 minutes.

Stratford: Home of the 2012 London Olympic games, Stratford has gone under much redevelopment over the last ten years. Because of this regeneration, rent is £500pcm, but the journey time into central London is only 17 minutes.

Streatham: Popular with art students, Streatham is also home to many models, actors and authors. Because of the price of fame, rent is a little more expensive at £600pcm.
