Emily Carr University of Art+Design (ECU), formerly known as the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, is a public post-secondary university and art school that is located in Vancouver, British Columbia. It was established in 1925 with the name Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts as the first degree-granting institution in the province specifically created for students of both the performing and visual arts. In 1978, the University was named after the Canadian artist, Emily Carr.
Being a world leader in art, design and media, the University is top-ranked in Canada for art and design, standing 24th worldwide in the QS World University Rankings by Subject. ECU encourages experimentation at the intersections of art, design, media and technology by merging studio practice, research and critical theory in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment.
The University has more than 1,800 students enrolled in graduate and undergraduate programs. There are also more than a thousand students taking workshops, certificate programs and individual courses at the University. The faculty, staff and alumni of ECU are internationally recognised as award-winning creators and thought leaders.
Services
Being one of the top art universities in the world, ECU attracts international students from more than 50 countries. All students are supported in their transition to the Canadian education system and they are provided with all the information for living and earning in Canada. Information regarding health insurance is also provided, apart from giving options to wellness programmes at the campus. The initial weekly schedules of the wellness program include a wellness kitchen where students can cook and connect and have baking social events. Accommodation
ECU does not directly operate a residence, although one student residence is made available at the Centre for Digital Media in the neighbourhood of Mount Pleasant. Aside from this, it is to be noted that the school itself is located near a large residential area that offers off-campus housing options and has also established a student housing website to further assist the students in finding the best possible accommodation near their educational institution.
