Applying to a Canadian University

If you want to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada, you’ll need to apply directly to the university or college.

By applying with StudyIn, you can access free expert guidance and choose from thousands of courses across hundreds of Canadian universities and colleges.

1. Choose Your Course and University

Canada offers a vast range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, with popular options including business, computer science, and engineering.

The country is divided into ten provinces, each with its own application procedures and entry requirements for international students. While you can apply to multiple institutions, some may limit you to a maximum of three programmes. Keep in mind that most universities charge a non-refundable application fee, so it’s a good idea to shortlist your preferred courses and institutions before submitting applications.

2. Gather Your Supporting Documents

When applying, you’ll need to provide:

  • Proof of English language proficiency

  • Evidence of how you will fund your studies

  • A statement of purpose (SOP)

  • Recommendation letters

  • Official academic transcripts

For undergraduate courses, your high school leaving certificate will be required. For postgraduate courses, you must provide proof of a completed bachelor’s degree from a recognised university. Some programmes may also request GRE/GMAT scores or a portfolio, depending on the subject area.

3. Submit Your Application

Canada does not have a centralised university application system, so you’ll need to apply directly to each university. As most institutions charge an application fee, make sure you are confident in your course and university choices before submitting.

4. Apply for Your Study Permit

Once you receive an offer letter from a Canadian university, you must apply for a Study Permit, which acts as your student visa. Ensure that your chosen institution is listed on Canada’s Designated Learning Institutions (DLI) list. The Study Permit process can take up to 60 days, so apply well in advance of your course start date.

5. Prepare to Arrive in Canada

Once your Study Permit is approved and you’ve accepted your offer, you’re ready to begin your academic journey in Canada.
