Cost of living in Canada as an international student

The cost of living and studying in Canada can vary depending on location, institution, program of study, and individual lifestyle choices.

Studying overseas can be expensive, but by budgeting correctly and ensuring you know all your incomings and outgoings, you can live a comfortable life while studying in Canada. Scholarships, grants, and part-time job opportunities can help alleviate the financial burden.

Cost of Living

Living expenses in Canada vary based on the city, accommodation type, and personal lifestyle. On average, monthly expenses range from CAD 1,225 to CAD 3,136. Major cities like Toronto and Vancouver tend to be on the higher end of this spectrum.

It’s important to note that these figures are approximate and can vary depending on lifestyle choices, personal spending habits, and location. You can research specific costs in the city or region you plan to live in, as well as consider potential additional expenses such as taxes, insurance, and unforeseen costs.

Proof of Financial Support

As of January 1, 2024, international students applying for a study permit must demonstrate sufficient funds to cover tuition, living expenses, and travel costs. For a single applicant studying outside Quebec, this means showing proof of at least CAD 20,635, in addition to the first year’s tuition and travel expenses.

Accommodation

Canadian universities and colleges often provide on-campus housing options, though availability is limited, so early application is advisable. Annual costs for on-campus accommodation typically range from CAD 8,000 to CAD 10,000. Off-campus housing costs vary:

  • On-Campus Housing: CAD 400 to CAD 1,500 per month.
  • Off-Campus Housing or Shared Apartments: CAD 600 to CAD 2,000 per month, with larger cities like Toronto and Vancouver at the higher end.

Study Permit

International students are required to obtain a study permit to enrol in Canadian educational institutions. The application fee for this permit is approximately CAD 150.

Additional Expenses

Beyond tuition and accommodation, students should budget for the following:

  • Food: Monthly grocery expenses range from CAD 200 to 400, depending on dietary habits.
  • Transportation: Public transportation is cost-effective, with monthly passes costing between CAD 100 and 150, varying by city.
  • Utilities: Expenses for electricity, heating, water, and internet typically total between CAD 100 and 200 per month, depending on apartment size and usage.
  • Health Insurance: All residents, including international students, must have health insurance. Costs vary by province; some offer government coverage, while others require private insurance, ranging from CAD 50 to 200 per month.
  • Entertainment and Recreation: Costs depend on personal preferences. For instance, movie tickets are about CAD 12 to 15, and gym memberships range from CAD 30 to 80 monthly.
