Even if you are already good at speaking and listening in English, writing to a high standard is one of the trickest parts of the IELTS exam.
Where do students go wrong in IELTS writing?
Students will be given a score of 1-9 for each part of the IELTS test, and students who only score 5 on the test often have the following issues:
- Do not address the task
- Too few words
- Poor structure
- Inappropriate use of linking words
- Use of informal words
- Poor vocabulary
- Frequent grammatical errors
All of these issues can be overcome through appropriate training and SI-UK can help. Sign up for preparation lessons in London and we can help you improve your writing ability ahead of the IELTS exam. A practice test will let us see where you need to improve.
How to improve your IELTS writing score
1. Make your arguments clear and address the task
In order to answer the exam questions appropriately, you first need to define what is asked, and then structure your argument around the question. If you do not plan your argument and essay, your argument will be less focused.
2. Have a solid structure
Your IELTS academic essay must have an introduction and conclusion in clear paragraphs. You should include only one argument/perspective in each paragraph and this rule is essential to make your essay clear and logical.
3. Use appropriate linking words
Learn linking words in situational categories (e.g. agreement, similarity, addition, opposition, limitation, condition). Informal words can be learnt from your IELTS teacher, while more formal writing can be found in broadsheet newspapers and academic texts.
