After looking at topics and subjects which are not likely to feature in the IELTS test last week, today we will focus on what sort of questions you are likely to be asked. Remember, this is not a definitive list, and each exam can feature different subjects of conversation.

Six topics that may feature in the IELTS exam

1. Technology

We have seen major advances in technology over the last 200 years, from medicine to transportation, and from communication to video games. Has this technology really improved our lives, or has it made them more difficult?

2. The Environment

The world is facing some very serious environmental problems at the moment and global warming, pollution, and the destruction of animal habitats, are all common topics of conversation. “How can we fix the environment?” is a common question, and may cover individual topics such as:

  • Water waste/scarcity
  • Recycling
  • Endangered species
  • Global warming

3. Countryside or city?

Over the past 200 years many countries have seen population movement away from rural areas towards urban areas. This has brought a lot of benefits, and also has some drawbacks. If you live in a city, think about the elements of city life that are a problem, for example rubbish, pollution, noise. What’s good about country life? Which is better?

4. Energy

Connected to environmental issues, we often see questions about new forms of energy generation. These could include solar or wave power, tidal or bioenergy. The hope is that these forms of energy will be able to power our lives safely without pollution. Is this possible?

5. Education

We often find questions about education in the IELTS test. Sometimes they are questions about your own education history and future, or sometimes they focus on issues such as bullying and favourite subjects.

6. Development

Many questions in the IELTS test connect to development. Has life got easier or more difficult? Are we happier now? What is “good” or “bad” development? Is it better to live in a rich country or a poor one? What’s the best way to help people in developing countries? Has technology reduced stress levels, or made life more difficult?
