Overview
The University of Otago Pathway and English Language Centre, located in Dunedin, offers a welcoming and supportive environment designed to help international students transition smoothly into university-level study.
Otago offers two main pathway qualifications for entry into bachelor’s degree programmes: the Diploma in Arts (DipArts), Diploma in Commerce (DipCom), and Diploma in Science (DipSci), as well as the Foundation Studies Certificate. The diplomas are ideal for students who narrowly missed meeting university entrance requirements and provide direct entry into the second year of a related bachelor’s degree. The Foundation Studies Certificate is designed to equip students with the essential academic knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to succeed in their first year of undergraduate study.
In addition, the English Language Centre provides a range of intensive programmes suitable for all levels, focusing on improving English proficiency for academic success. Otago’s pathway and English programmes foster a culturally inclusive, motivating, and highly supportive learning environment that empowers students to succeed.
Services
The University of Otago Pathway and English Language Centre offers extensive services to support international students. The dedicated International Office provides a comprehensive orientation program that covers essential information about living and studying in Dunedin. This includes sessions on accommodation, healthcare, banking, and an introduction to New Zealand culture and laws.
Additionally, the Centre offers ongoing support through workshops, seminars, and one-on-one consultations to address any academic or personal issues that may arise.

Accommodation
The University of Otago provides various accommodation options to suit the needs of international students. One of the primary choices is the University-managed residential colleges, such as Studholme College and Cumberland College.
These colleges offer a supportive living environment with fully furnished rooms, communal dining facilities, study spaces, and recreational areas. The residential colleges also provide pastoral care and academic support, creating a balanced and enriching living experience.
