1-year Postgraduate / Masters Courses in the UK

Masters / postgraduate study in the UK follows the successful completion of an undergraduate degree, generally lasting for just one year compared to two-year Masters programs found elsewhere in the world. This means students can save time, and money and begin their career much quicker with a highly regarded UK postgraduate degree.

Why study a Postgraduate Masters degree in the UK?

The UK is home to some of the leading universities in the world, renowned for their quality of teaching and research. A UK postgraduate degree is held in high esteem by employers, and for international students studying in the UK, it is a fantastic opportunity to immerse themselves in a multicultural and exciting community of academics and students. You will:

  • Improve your career prospects
  • Gain an internationally recognized qualification
  • Earn more over the course of your career because of the weight a UK Masters carries
  • Have the option to take part in work placement or study abroad

Work placements can vary from a few weeks to a full year of paid placement, generally following the completion of a 1-year postgraduate degree.

A study carried out in 2018/19 (most recent survey) by the Higher Education Statistics Agency showed that 88 percent of students who completed a Postgraduate Masters in the UK were in full-time employment following graduation, compared to just 75 percent of undergraduate leavers.

Types of Postgraduate and Masters Degree

Taught Masters

There are three main types of taught programs, Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MSc) and Master of Business Administration (MBA). Those interested in MSc Pre-registration degrees should speak to an StudyIn consultant about the 2 to 3-year postgraduate degrees.

In a taught program, students are expected to attend weekly seminars, tutorials and lectures, much like an undergraduate degree, and assessment can be via exam, dissertation or project.

Research Masters

A Research degree will see students take more responsibility for their work and schedule, basing their study around a thesis while being supervised by an academic.

Other types of Research degrees include the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Master of Research (MRes). These degrees are similar to a Ph.D., but not as academically demanding with papers being much shorter.

How much does a Postgraduate / Masters cost?

For international students tuition fees for postgraduate degrees typically start from £12,000. Tuition fees at the postgraduate level vary on the type of Masters you wish to study, which part of the UK you wish to live in, and what university you attend.

Postgraduate schools in the UK are far less expensive than Canadian universities, and studying in the UK is typically cheaper than in North American universities.

Am I eligible to study a Postgraduate / Masters in the UK?

Canadian students who have graduated with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited Canadian university with a grade point average, usually 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale, can be considered for graduate studies in the UK.

UK universities do not only consider a student’s GPA when making an admission decision. They also value a well-written personal statement and academic letters of reference.
